Team Anaconda calls Austin home. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin boasts a unique and vibrant culture bustling with music and art, eclectic dining, vintage shopping, and beautiful outdoor spaces. On this page you’ll find staff recommendations on things to do, what to eat, where to go, and how to get there while you’re here in town. We can’t wait to see you!

Fairmont Austin

The newly built Fairmont Austin hotel is a beautiful venue with spectacular views, inside and out. Within walking distance of our popular Rainey Street district and only steps away from some of the best music venues in Austin, the Fairmont provides the perfect home for AnacondaCON 2019.

Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden

Learn how to party Austin-style! After enjoying a day of talks on Thursday, conference guests are invited to mingle with fellow attendees at our AnacondaCON Carne Offsite Party. Taking place this year at Banger’s on Rainey Street, our party will feature authentic Austin cuisine, an open bar, festive music, and the chance to network and foster lifelong connections with members of the Python community.

No stay in Austin would be complete without a trip to our iconic SoCo neighborhood. Located just south of downtown, this stretch of South Congress Ave is packed with unique music venues, street art, galleries, boutiques, bars, and restaurants. To plan your visit, check out Doing the Streets: South Congress.

    • Hike & Bike Trail

Ask Austinites why they love living here and they’ll tell you about our abundance of outdoor spaces. In the heart of downtown Austin is Lady Bird Lake, surrounded by 10 miles of trails ideal for running, cycling, and leisurely bird-watching. Want to get off the trail and into the water? Kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals are readily available at multiple locations.

    • Barton Creek Greenbelt

Located in South Austin just minutes from downtown, our much beloved Greenbelt features miles of beautiful hiking trails, with designated areas for mountain biking, rock climbing, and swimming.

    • Barton Springs Pool

Swimming outside in April? You know it! Here in sunny Austin we swim year-round at Barton Springs Pool, a natural, spring-fed pool maintaining a brisk 68 degrees. The three-acre pool is surrounded by grassy slopes, perfect for lounging and people-watching.

    • Bats

Did you know that Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America? From March through November, spectators convene on and below the South Congress Bridge to watch up to 1.5 million bats spiral into the night sky. Peak bat-watching time is every evening from 7:00-8:00pm. Get there early to stake out your spot!

    • Tacos

Here in Austin we eat tacos for breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses...you get the idea. Finding delicious tacos in this city is hardly a challenge, but some of our favorites come from Torchy’s, Taco Deli, Veracruz All Natural, and Austin Taco Project, which is an easy walk from AnacondaCON 2018. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, give the Korean-Mexican fusion tacos from Chi’lantro a try!

    • BBQ

Texans take their BBQ seriously. Ask a group of locals to name their favorite BBQ and you’ll likely have a fight on your hands. That being said, Team Anaconda recommends Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, just minutes from AnacondaCON 2018; Stubb’s BBQ, a legendary restaurant, bar, and music venue; Iron Works Barbeque, the perfect stop on your way to Rainey Street; Terry Black’s Barbecue in South Austin; Micklethwait Craft Meats in East Austin; and, of course, Franklin Barbeque—world-famous, award-winning, obsessed-over. If you can handle the long lines, it is well worth the wait.

    • Vegetarian/Vegan

Austin also embraces the meat-free among us. You can find vegetarian and vegan options at most establishments (well...maybe not the BBQ joints), but if you prefer a place that caters specifically to the veggie crowd, we’ve got you covered there, too. Experience Texas-style vegan barbeque at BBQ Revolution, grab dinner and a pint at The Beer Plant, relax with some comfort food at Counter Culture, and satisfy those late-night cravings with a vegan bacon cheeseburger from Arlo’s.

    • Coffee

Austin’s downtown area offers plenty of options to satiate your coffee-addicted hearts. Within walking distance of AnacondaCON 2018 you’ll find Houndstooth Coffee, Halcyon, Austin Java, My Name is Joe, Caffé Medici, Jo’s Coffee, The Hideout Coffee House, Lola Savannah Coffee Lounge, and (of course) Starbucks.

    • Music

Austin isn’t called the Live Music Capital of the World for nothing—we’ve got more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the nation! If you’re looking to catch a show during your stay, one sure bet is to make your way over to the Red River Music District, where you’ll find a stretch of venues catering to tastes ranging from psych rock to bluegrass to EDM. For specific show listings around town, check out Do512 or Showlist Austin.

    • 6th Street

Just a few short blocks from AnacondaCON 2018 is the East 6th Street entertainment district, affectionately known by locals as “Dirty 6th.” Here you’ll find no shortage of bars, music venues, dining options, or people doing their best to Keep Austin Weird. Enjoy the killer happy hour at Parkside, explore the historic (and haunted!) Driskill Hotel, feed your sweet side at Voodoo Doughnut, and make your way down to the bake shop and beer garden at Easy Tiger for snacks, microbrews, and ping pong.

    • Honky Tonk

It wouldn’t be a trip to Texas without swinging by one of our classic honky tonk bars. You can try out your two-steppin’ skills at The White Horse or Ray’s Backstage at the Rattle Inn, or head south to legendary dancehall Broken Spoke, where locals have been known to run into such Austin luminaries as Willie Nelson and Matthew McConaughey.

    • Rainey Street

Bar-crawling has never been this fun. Just south of downtown is Rainey Street, a tucked-away stretch of converted bungalow bars with something for everyone. Choose from a broad selection of Texas beers at Craft Pride and Bangers, indulge in sleek craft cocktails at Clive Bar, feast your ears on loud, live music at The Blackheart, then refuel at one of the many food trucks dotting the street before crawling to your next destination.

    • Taxis

The quickest way to catch a cab is to wait by the taxi stand outside the JW Marriott. But taxis abound downtown, particularly in the evening hours.

    • Rideshares

Lyft, Uber, and Fasten are just some of the rideshare apps with a major presence in Austin.

    • Austin B-cycle

Explore the city through the convenient Austin B-cycle bike share system. With over 50 stations scattered throughout Central Austin, B-cycle allows you to coast through town at your own pace.

    • Pedicab

Perfect for those moments when you just can’t walk anymore. On most nights you can find pedicabs throughout downtown, in the entertainment district, and on the East Side.
